Short answer
STI misinformation follows two patterns: inventing transmission routes that do not exist (toilets, pools, casual kissing for most STIs, mosquitoes for HIV) and denying routes that do (silent spread, oral-sex transmission, skin-to-skin transmission, partial condom protection).
Ten persistent myths below, each retired with verifiable evidence. And every correction paired with the action it enables (test, vaccinate, barrier, communicate).

- Toilet seats, hot tubs, swimming pools, hugging, and sharing food transmit no STIs (organisms dying within minutes on surfaces. Transmission needing mucosal deposition, blood entry, or birth passage).
- Casual kissing transmits no HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea (saliva is not a vector for these. Oral herpes and rare oral-syphilis contact excepted).
- Mosquitoes do not transmit HIV (no mechanical transmission. The virus cannot replicate in insects).
These myths waste worry, stigmatize casual contact, and, most harmfully, let real routes hide behind imaginary ones.

Myths that deny risk. Protection restored
- “You’d know if you had one” (most STIs are silent most of the time. Screening, not symptoms, detects).
- “Oral sex is safe” (gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and chlamydia all use the oral route. Throat swabs belong in post-exposure panels).
- “Condoms make sex 100% safe” (superb against fluid-borne infections, partial against skin-to-skin. Layering with vaccines and screening closes the remainder).
- “Pulling out prevents STIs” (pre-ejaculate carrying pathogens from first contact. Timing cannot recall secreted fluids).
- “We’re monogamous so we’re safe” (only with verified tested monogamy from the start. Agreements unverified by testing are hopes, not data).
Myths about testing and cure. Process corrected
- “One test covers everything” (no single sample or panel does. Genital plus throat/rectal swabs plus blood work by exposure).
- “Antibiotics cure all STIs” (bacterial STIs cure; viral STIs manage. Herpes, HPV, HIV protocols control without eradicating).
- “Natural remedies work” (garlic, oils, and “cleanses” carry no evidence and delay effective care. The delay itself causes the complications).
- “A negative test the day after exposure clears me” (window periods mean early tests miss recent infections. Baselines pair with dated retests, never substitute for them).
How to verify claims. The 60-second check
- Check CDC, FDA, NIH, and MedlinePlus first (authoritative, current, non-selling. Bookmark all four).
- Distrust sellers of cures (products attached to claims corrupt them).
- Distrust anecdote-only forums (selection bias concentrates horror stories and miracle cures alike).
- Confirm dates (STI guidance evolves. Treatment regimens especially; undated medical claims are suspect).
- Bring viral claims to appointments (clinicians adjudicate these routinely. Screenshots welcome).
When to seek care
Whenever a myth shaped your behavior, untested exposures, skipped screening, refused vaccines, convert the correction into an appointment.
